BLAST AfterSchool Club

If you would like to reserve a place for your child(ren) please complete a registration form and return it to the Junior School office.  Should a place not be available, your child will be placed on a waiting list until a space becomes available.

We encourage and actively support eligible parents/carers claiming and taking up the childcare element of the Working Tax Credit, Tax-free childcare and those who are entitled to childcare vouchers through their employer.

What is Woolenwick BLAST Club?

 Woolenwick BLAST Club is an out of school childcare setting which opened in 2003 for children from Nursery age to 11 years who attend Woolenwick Nursery, Infant and Junior School. Blast has been awarded the ‘Hertfordshire Quality Standards’ kitemark for all clubs.

The Club is school run.

Blast is managed by Mrs Baynham, a Deputy Mrs Eagland, Mrs Cooper and Mrs Lisa Withers our Playworkers, all of which are employed by Woolenwick Junior School.

Registration:

Blast Club is registered under Woolenwick Junior school’s Ofsted registration number: – 117322. You will need this number if paying by childcare vouchers, Tax-free childcare or claiming the childcare element of Working Tax Credits.

Bookings:

You will be sent a booking form every month to be completed by the date indicated. Places cannot be guaranteed if the booking form is returned late.

Payment Methods:

Blast payments can be made by cash, cheque, Tax-free childcare or via School Comms (Junior School children only).  Blast is also registered with several childcare voucher companies. Payment is always required in advance. There are no refunds for cancellations.

Behaviour:

Unacceptable behaviour will not be tolerated. Blast Club reserves the right to cancel your contract, as we have a duty of care to all the children in our care. See Behaviour and Exclusion policy.

Mobile Phones:

The use of Mobile phones is prohibited in our setting.  Can parents please make sure that all calls are finished before entering the school site.

 

What does the BLAST Club provide?

 Breakfast and After School Club is available Monday – Friday during term time. The Club will not be open on Inset days or when the school is closed.

Breakfast Club:

Session 1 = 7.45 – 8.50         £3.80 (siblings £3.10)

Session 2 = 8.00 – 8.50         £3.30 (siblings £2.60)

Children MUST always be signed in by the adult dropping them off.

Breakfast is served until 8.20am and includes: a variety of non-sugared cereal, bagel with assorted spreads, yoghurts, fresh fruit and apple/orange juice.

Children who attend the Junior School will be allowed to go into the playground, with a member of staff, at 08.40. Infant school children will be walked over to the Infant School.  Infant school children wear high-visibility jackets and use a walking rope as they transfer from one building to another.

 

After school:

Session 1 = 3.15pm – 4.15pm        £5.80 (sibling £5.10)

Session 2 = 3.15pm – 5.15pm        £7.80 (sibling £7.10)

Session 3 = 3.15pm – 6.15pm        £9.70 (sibling £9.10)

Late pick up (after 6.15pm) will incur an additional charge of £10.00 per ¼ hour.

There will be an additional charge of 70p per session cost for last minute bookings.

 

What Activities are Offered at BLAST

Woolenwick BLAST Club emphasises the play aspect of childhood.

Having spent the day at school, the club sessions are designed to include quiet time and free play as well as planned activities.

There are a wide variety of planned activities each week, these may include:

  • Creative activities – painting, drawing, cutting, sticking and model making.
  • Free play with activities chosen by the individual child.
  • Imaginative play – dressing up.
  • Messy play – clay and dough.
  • Physical activities – indoor games.
  • Outdoor play – scooters, play equipment, football etc.
  • Wii
  • Construction – Lego, marble run, wooden bricks etc.
  • Role play – Wooden log cabin
  • Den building

 

“Play provides a fundamental learning process for children, allowing them to expand their skills, knowledge and understanding of the world. It allows them to test their abilities, use initiative, take risks and make mistakes without fear of failure. Children’s learning through play is broad ranging and crucially is not fixed to adult expectations of what should be achieved by children. The motivation for play, exploration and discovery comes from the child him or herself rather than from any outside reward. It is particularly important that children with disabilities are enabled to play as fully as possible and that play providers actively plan to ensure that their provision is accessible to them – not just physically but in terms of attitude, atmosphere and flexibility”.

Risky Play

This is not about exposing children to unacceptable hazards but looking at ways we can provide creative opportunities that can enhance the quality of the play provision.

By providing children with positive play opportunities, within a stimulating and challenging environment, enables them to take manageable risks to test and develop their own abilities. As with any type of risky play, risk assessments are completed prior to activity as a way of determining risk verses benefit.

‘easy-peasy’. We do not force children to do anything that they feel is beyond them or encourage them to go any further than they feel safe. Neither do we simply leave children to fend for themselves”.

“Play is great for children’s well-being and development. When planning and providing play opportunities the goal is not to eliminate risk but to weigh up the risks and benefits.  No child will learn about risk if they are wrapped in cotton wool”.
